Storing Floating Docks

Given the more volatile water levels and severe weather events, it means that greater care needs to be taken to ensure docks don’t get lost or damaged. The number of docks that have washed up on bays around the area has increased significantly. It’s a blight on the shoreline and has damaged habitat. Please use extra diligence to secure and protect stored docks from the weather and water levels.

Unfortunately , as docks become more expensive, theft has become an issue. Sadly, a 5' x 16' floating dock, stored for the winter on Burnt Island which is Crown Land near Rogers S Turn in upper Shawanaga, was apparently stolen from that spot sometime between Oct 7-11. It had the owner's name on it and evidence at the location indicated the individuals made a new black stencil to cover up the owner's name which appeared on two sides.

All community members who have property stolen should report directly to the OPP. Our police forces are utilizing data analytics and need to know of crimes in our community. Please report any concerns. Also if you see questionable activity, please contact the Parry Sound OPP at 705-746-4225 so that they can better monitor any illegal activity in the area.

The Georgian Bay Biosphere Reserve invites you to attend the State of the Bay Conference being held on November 19, 2019 at the Charles W. Stockey Centre in Parry Sound.

This conference presents the latest research and monitoring findings on  water quality lower food web , and  fish communities . The conference is open to the public and will include presentations from a number of speakers, partner profiles, and breakout sessions for facilitated discussions centred around several key themes.

Join us to learn about:
  • How climate change is impacting water levels, water quality, and ecosystems
  • Actions needed to address climate change impacts and mitigate causes of global warming
  • How nutrient levels are changing in offshore and nearshore environments
  • How coastal structure and processes influence nutrient gradients
  • How the lower food web is responding to changes in lake productivity
